Well this is a new one.
Apparently Nordstrom department store found six fraud devices attached to their cash registers over the week. It is a small device that is usually attached to ATMs in order to get people's pin numbers and account details.
Security cameras show six men distracting staff while they fitted the devices to the machines. Scary. It shows the men also removing the back of the till while others distracted the staff and photographing the layout of the till before placing the back back on the till. They returned hours later to fit the device.
The devices are said to look like : 'The fraud devices in this case resemble small keyloggers that are sold by dozens of stores for approximately $30 to $40 apiece. These hardware keyloggers are essentially Ps/2 connectors that are about an inch in length. The tiny data storage devices are usually purple in color to match the color-coded standard for keyboards, and are made to be inserted between the male end of a PS/2 keyboard connector and the female receptor on a computer.'
(Can I just butt in here for a moment and as add that as someone who is technologically confused - there are male and female parts of a computer!?!?!?!??!?!)
It isn't clear if they managed to get any of the information from the devices but its a little scary to think that it was so clearly planned out. How many of us do not think twice about trusting the store to look after our credit card information?
I know this is quite clearly a strange incident which is not the fault of the store and they have acted quickly to prevent any problems but think about the scale of how bad this could have been. If you shop there then its not likely to be a small amount of money that you spend. They could have got hundreds or thousands.
