Demi Lovato's "Confident" - Single Review

As pop princess Demi Lovato preps her anticipated fifth studio album, the effort's lead single "Cool For the Summer" is sitting at a respectable number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 following decent week-to-week sales and a provocative music video. However, though the lead offering is only two months old, Lovato is wasting no time on the album's promotion as she sets her energy on the rumored follow up, the sassy and catchy "Confident".

Originally intended as the album's lead single, before it was swapped for the better suited "Cool For the Summer", the recently surfaced "Confident" perfectly embodies the fearless attitude of Lovato and the fun and exciting pop production of Max Martin. The new track is an uptempo, thumping, slightly R&B-leaning effort that showcases a different direction and vibe for the upcoming album.

What standouts about the new release is the chant-worthy delivery from Lovato as she shares empowering messages of standing strong and remaining assertive over a slick, radio-friendly beat. "I used to hold my freak back, now I'm letting go, I make my own choice, yeah I run this show, " the artist belts as some rock influences come through to complete the chart-topping recipe of the new single.

"Confident" does not instantly come off as innovative or thrilling as its predecessor, however, it is a solid, hard-hitting pop release that should easily continue to build the buzz towards Lovato's maturing musical sound and image. Besides a knockout, fierce vocal performance from the young artist, the track excels thanks to songwriting that seems to be calling out Lovato's critics, standing on her own two feet as an independent, unapologetic woman.

With "Cool For the Summer" still going strong on the charts, it will be interesting to see when the slick "Confident" will finds its way onto the airwaves. Instead of just a been-there-done-that pop/dance tone, Lovato appears to be branching out and finding success with intriguing and refreshing genre inspirations. The rumored second single signals a turn away from the Disney bubblegum pop of her past, setting sights on meaningful, somewhat rebellious numbers instead.
