It has been well over two years since Welsh singer Marina and the Diamonds released her eccentric electropop sophomore effort, Electra Heart, and though it did not make a huge splash stateside, the effort redefined the innovative artist for the better. Following the album's last single release, the "Primadonna" crooner's music career was at a standstill... until the teases started for her upcoming April 2015 third studio album. This one is going to be good!
Promising to release a brand new track every month until the official release of FROOT, Marina and the Diamonds thankfully shared the somber ballad "Happy" earlier this week and quickly sent critics, bloggers and fans alike into a convulsion of pop heaven happiness. The song maintains the artist's signature style of vocal performance as she takes the time to reflect on her own life on the piano-driven track. She's definitely building the right kind of buzz for the new album.
Do not let the song title fool you, "Happy" is not the glorious, overly triumphant, dance song one may have initially expected. While the solid songwriting paints an optimistic picture for Marina and the Diamonds, there is still a sense of hurt and despair coming from her vocals. Incredibly confusing. "Don't go out much at all, I've never been the type to call, I realize to be happy, maybe I need a little company," she beautiful sings on the subtle verses before the chorus amps up the vocal volume and production for a powerful punch.
Marina and the Diamonds has definitely showcased an artistic reinvention for all of her projects. Her upcoming album will be no different. "Happy" strips away the loud and distracting pop production in exchange for more attention on the actual performance and touching lyrics. Now, there's probably a slim chance that this new single will blow up the charts, although it probably should. Of the artist's distinct and diverse catalog, the ballad is up there as one of her better releases. Looking forward to April.
... and if you haven't done so yet, be sure to check out the lead single/title track "FROOT" as it's a brilliant disco-laced pop gem that NEEDS to be heard!
